Hero Spotlight

Nominators and Nominees, along with The Trend Talk hosts and Poise Makeup Professional Director.
Poise Makeup Professional had the honor to partner with The Trend Talk to celebrate women who are making big moves in our community. We asked for nominations of women who go out in the world and make a difference. Women who support others, who help make their communities a better place. The winners received a makeover that consisted of an hour to relax and enjoy, speeches from their nominators, and recognition for their efforts.
Not all heroes wear capes, and these amazing women proved just that! Here is a list of this year's winners, their stories, as well as their before and after images.

Nominee | Arcelia Sasso; Makeup Artist | Michelle Bradley
Arcelia was nominated by Michelle Bradley. Michelle shared that since the day she met Arcelia, "I saw her as a strong woman with hardworking and caring qualities. She is in so many ways our "work mom". She takes care of all of us with her upbeat attitude, quickness to help with our various projects as well as treating us to her amazing cooking! Even her food is thoughtful - so flavorful! Arcelia is a mother of three, a loving wife, and care-taker of many friends and neighbors. She is someone who is always looking out for others and is loved by many. She is also a breast cancer survivor! She definitely fits the role of a SHE-RO! I am so happy to nominate this strong, fun and loving individual, Arcelia Sasso! I can't think of a woman who deserves it more!"

Nominee | Darlene Rodrigo; Makeup Artist | Monique Palma
Darlene was nominated by The Trend Talk's very own Naibe Reynoso. Naibe nominated Darlene because "she’s the epitome of a working mom who is an advocate for her Special needs daughter. Darlene works a full-time, demanding job as a producer for KOST 103.5 , but at the same time, she fights tirelessly to educate the world about Special needs children like her beautiful Bella. She also uses her platform to reach out to others and bring light to those who face similar challenges. But because she juggles so much, she doesn’t get pampered often. It’s time!"

Nominee | Mirna Aguilar; Makeup Artist | Rachel Salvador
Mirna was nominated by Carolyn Caldera-De Fanti. Carolyn shared that she nominated Mirna because she has "watched and admired Mirna for 23 years and the obstacles she has overcome. First in leaving everything behind in her native country. Crossing under perilous circumstances with her little boy (2 yrs old) and arriving in the U.S with no family, no resources. She struggled and built a life for herself and her children. She was abused as a child and a young woman, yet held onto her dreams, dignity and kept on fighting to create a better life. She is an active member of her community, she has helped build a neighborhood garden, a place for people to grow their own food, teach their children about growing their own food, eating healthy and a place for the community to interact. Mirna currently raises her 4 grandchildren with the help of her husband. She has legally adopted one of them. Both of the parents are not present in the children’s life. She is basically their primary caretaker. Aside from caring for her grandchildren, 4 grown children, Mirna works in 3 separate households from Monday-Friday. Mirna attends school to learn English and Computer. Mirna is a shining example of an everyday shero. She is definitely my role model of a survivor, warrior and all around strong wonderful woman."

Nominee | Yenesen Echeverria; Makeup Artist | Devon Taylor
Yenesen was nominated by Elvia Barboa. Elvia nominated Yenesen because she "is an amazing mother of two. At the age of 5, her son Ruben was diagnosed with Leukemia. Her son Ruben is currently on what’s called maintenance treatment, which is the final stages of treatment where the patient still receives some minor chemo, but is preparing to go off into survivorship. Like other mothers who have a child diagnosed with cancer, Yenesen was always by her son's side, always putting his needs and her family’s needs first before her own. During her son’s treatment course, Yenesen learned about PADRES Contra El Cáncer, became a recipient of its programs, and soon after began volunteering to support the organization and events, even though her child was still on treatment. She had remained positive, giving back to those that have helped her. Yenesen also built a community of volunteers/supporters to help PADRES Contra El Cáncer with fundraising, and has helped other nonprofit organizations battling childhood cancer with supporting with awareness campaigns. Yenesen, with her family, in addition to her support she was providing for her son and PADRES, also began donating meals to families staying at the Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House, many who are also battling cancer or other life-threatening diseases. In addition, she began collecting toys for the Holidays to give to families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. And if that wasn’t enough to keep her occupied, Yenesen, in the last few years, started supporting a local PADRES partner/ supporter in feeding the homeless on skid row. Yenesen and her family are givers. They have been there supporting her son during treatment, but then set a goal to help others in need. She is an amazing, resilient mother and role model who has an amazing, positive attitude and a smile to greet you each time she sees you, no matter what is going on. She always thinks of others before herself which is why she deserves a make-over.

Nominee | Laura Sixtos; Makeup Artist | Richard Espinoza
Laura was nominated by her friend, Elia Esparza. Elia nominated Laura because "she is always doing things for others. She is a friend you can depend on no matter what. She's self-less and doesn't think about doing things for herself, but always for others. A lovely, charming woman who is recently separated from a long marriage and is deeply hurt by it... a makeover would be really uplifting for her."
